The story

Anotsofictionaltown

01The town1 / 3

Belhavre is a small Acadian town of 5,000 people tucked between the sea and the forest, somewhere on the east coast of Canada. You can hear the wind coming up from the harbour at first light, the echo of the gulls above the fishing boats, and the dull knock of the logs the forestry co-operative has been hauling out of the woods since the turn of the last century. There is also a town hall with a modest steeple, a chamber of commerce that brings together the business owners of the region, a physiotherapy clinic that tends to the tired hands of the people of the sea, a law firm that takes in the family and commercial files of the county, two restaurants known throughout the region, a comic book shop kept alive by a community of enthusiasts, and many other places that carry the daily life of the town.

The neighbourhoods

Explorebyneighbourhood

Belhavre is organized into five neighbourhoods, each with its own purpose and atmosphere. The harbour to the south where the people of the sea work, the town centre where the institutions and business sit, the professional district to the east where the firms and clinics are found, the shopping street that runs across town with its restaurants and specialty shops, and the northern forests where the forestry co-operative has watched over the woods for four generations. Every business is housed in a neighbourhood, and every neighbourhood tells part of the town.
